Dear readers,

All of these poems were created as part of a lesson from my student teaching experience. In the midst of intense testing season, I thought it was important to give the students a break from the monotony of filling in bubbles. Thus, this activity was born.

You may be asking yourself, “Why blackout poetry?” As someone who has struggled with writing poetry in the past, blackout poetry was introduced to me by a college professor during my first year of higher education. This technique was one of my first steps to enjoying the poetry process, as it made me think outside of the box. I had also seen a few high school teachers try this activity with their students, and the results were always so creative. So, I challenged my group of students to do the same.

It is amazing to read what the students have written, and we hope you enjoy all of the work they created.
